“I am only one, but still I am one. I cannot do everything, but still I can do something; and because I cannot do everything, I will not refuse to do something that I can do.”
― Helen Keller
There’s a lot of “fighting” going on in the world right now…
And yes, there is a time to fight… but is there ever a time that we should fight and cause destruction to our own people, to our own family?
The fighting and destruction is happening among friends and families, and it’s happening among enemies, just the same.
Have you ever been on the outside of a fight, looking in?
From the outside, you watch these people fighting with each other, and you wonder if they can see anything other than ‘red.’
You wonder if they can hear anything other than their own thoughts and opinions boiling over, coming through their mouths…
You wonder if the fight will ever settle down enough to be calmly, and truly resolved.
I think we’ve all been on both sides of a fight like this, in one way or another.
The longer the fight goes on, the more heated it gets, the less we can hear each other, the more damage is done, and the more repair is going to be needed.
What happens when we find ourselves in the middle of a fight with someone, and we forget what we’re even trying to achieve? We forget what we are even disagreeing and fighting over! What are we trying to achieve?
What happens when the “main thing isn’t the main thing” anymore?
We forget why we’re even fighting. We suddenly can’t see what we’re even doing…
If we could only see what we’re really doing…
Oh Father, You see! You see what we’re doing when we get lost in a fight with each other. You see how we’re blindly destroying each other — our own people… We can become so blind and so distracted from within the fight, that we can’t see the big, near fatal gash we’ve just put in the other person from the words we just spouted out—and we’re too distracted to able to stop and see that we’ve been wounded as well. Give us sensitivity and gentleness and wisdom to be able to know how to interact and react with those we disagree with, and with those who have hurt us, and help us to realize and be aware…when we’re ‘fighting’ when we shouldn’t be fighting, and when we’re wounding our own people. Holy Spirit, where there is disunity in our country, in our towns, in our churches, in our homes— I ask and pray that You will bring unity and peace and understanding to our hearts. Wake us up! Grow us up! Make us aware! Where there is distraction, give us awareness of that distraction. Help us to see what we are doing, and what is really happening when we continue fighting in this way. Remind us of what we need reminding of. Teach us how to be in harmony as You have designed Your people to be.
“Be faithful to guard the sweet harmony of the Holy Spirit among you in the bonds of peace, 4 being one body and one spirit, as you were all called into the same glorious hope of divine destiny.5 For the Lord God is one, and so are we, for we share in one faith, one baptism, and one Father.” —Ephesians 4:3-5 TPT
