I’ve been thinking about the word “deliverance” this morning, and really I’ve been thinking about it a lot over the last week.
What do you think of when you hear the word “deliverance”?
Maybe you think of demons. Maybe you think only “bad” people need “deliverance”. Maybe you think of “deliverance” as when a person goes through a prayer of deliverance to set them free of demonic holds. Maybe you think of an event in your life when you felt set free of something and you know you were “delivered” and set free of that thing. (Maybe you think of that movie called “Deliverance” with the banjos, which I have never seen. haha)
Yes, it is those things,
…but it is also such a huge part of the lifestyle of a child of God. It is part of who Jesus is for us. Our Deliverer. Our Rescuer.
It’s an ongoing thing, to be delivered. As believers we are constantly going through the journey of being set free, we’re being led through dangers and hard times and challenging or impossible situations. Jesus is our Deliverer. He comes to our rescue. He is setting us free. We are always in need of being rescued and delivered by Him.
1. the action of being rescued or set free.
Synonyms:
liberation, release, freeing, rescue, delivery, discharge, ransom, emancipation; salvation, redemption
In Psalm 91, verses 14-16 it says,
“Because he is lovingly devoted to Me,
I will deliver him;
I will protect him because he knows My name.
When he calls out to Me, I will answer him;
I will be with him in trouble.
I will rescue him and give him honor.
I will satisfy him with a long life
and show him My salvation.” (HCSB)
One last thing to consider:
Do I just clean my house one time and that’s it?
We have to keep our houses clean, don’t we?
It’s an ongoing thing, isn’t it?
And how often are we in dangerous situations in this life? Probably more than we are aware of. We need Him desperately.
This is something I have been reminded of. We live in an imperfect world, in our imperfect bodies. How we desperately need Jesus to be our Deliverer. Lord help us if we ever think we don’t need Him to be that for us every day.
Don’t be afraid of the word “deliverance” as I was for such a long time. There is no need to be offended by it or to feel dreadful about it. It is part of who Jesus is for us. He is our Deliverer, He rescues us from harm and sets us free. He is setting us free every day. It’s part of the journey. It’s because He’s good. It’s because He loves us.
There is a spiritual battle going on all around us. Sometimes we do need others to pray for us, and this is never something to avoid or feel embarrassed about. It’s all part of the journey. It’s all part of God’s goodness and redemption for our lives.
