I’ve been thinking about “intention” this morning…
Intention…the idea behind actions.
The plan, the design, the dream, the reason, the purpose…
The true condition of the heart.
“All the ways of a man are clean in his own sight, But the LORD weighs the motives.” – Proverbs 16:2
I’m often having to check my intentions. Are the things I do based out of love? Or are they devised (whether I realize it or not) out of selfishness, out of fear, out of insecurity, out of needing approval and acceptance, out of pride?
Why do I do the things I do?
“For the word of God is living and active and sharper than any two-edged sword, and piercing as far as the division of soul and spirit, of both joints and marrow, and able to judge the thoughts and intentions of the heart.” – Hebrews 4:12
God, Your intention is always based on love. It’s who You are! You went to the trouble to create all of us, with all of our imperfections and issues and things we have to work through… and You decided to be patient and kind to us….. Your intention is love.
“Anyone who does not love does not know God, because God is love.” – 1 John 4:8
An “intention” that is patient, kind, long suffering, unselfish, good…
He does hard things, allows hard things, teaches us hard things –out of love…
“Greater love has no one than this, that someone lay down his life for his friends.” -John 15:13
“For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life.” – John 3:16
He waits for us out of love…
Love does things even when they’re inconvenient.
Love is brave…
“There is no fear in love, but perfect love casts out fear. For fear has to do with punishment, and whoever fears has not been perfected in love.” – 1 John 4:18
When He looks at us, He sees what He loves about us…
“Above all, keep loving one another earnestly, since love covers a multitude of sins.” -1 Peter 4:8
He birthed us to love us, and to teach us how to love. Isn’t that amazing?
“Let all that you do be done in love.” -1 Corinthians 16:14
Love leads by example.
“A new commandment I give to you, that you love one another: just as I have loved you, you also are to love one another. By this all people will know that you are my disciples, if you have love for one another.” -John 13:34-35
He teaches us how to love.
“We love because he first loved us.” -1 John 4:19
“And above all these put on love, which binds everything together in perfect harmony.” -Colossians 3:14
Do we even really get it? Can we even come close to understanding the level of love that He has for us, that He is? We can’t contain it. But we’re not meant to “contain” it, are we?
He’s teaching us how to love. He’s teaching us how to use the heart He created within us to use, the way He intended it to be used. We were created to love and to be loved. Pure and simple, and yet it goes deeper than deep can go.
It’s His intention, His design, His dream.
Wow, what a process… and He does it all out of love.
Thank You, Father. ?Jesus, what a beautiful example You are. Thank You for showing us the way. Oh God, purify my intentions. Make me more like You.
