I feel like there is an urgency right now to be aware of our surroundings, and to be aware, and to be watchful.
Not fearful—not skittish—but aware, in-tune with God’s heart and with His Spirit…to make sure we are paying attention—fully awake, fully aware.
…that we will not be led astray.
…that we will not be distracted.
…that we will not be “whisked” off course.
…that we will not be diverted from the path.
…that we will not be distracted away from our assignment.
Not afraid, not allowing fear to push us into hiding…
But prepared, on guard, trained, ready, and equipped.
It’s kind of like taking a self-defense class...
They train you to know what to look for, what to watch for, how to be aware of your surroundings, how to not be a victim… and then if you should come under attack, they teach you how to be properly armed, how to use your weapon in defense.
“Do you think I came to bring peace on earth? No, I tell you, but division.”—Luke 12:51
“Therefore put on the full armor of God, so that when the day of evil comes, you may be able to stand your ground, and after you have done everything, to stand.” —Ephesians 6:13
“Jesus said, “But now I say to you: Take what you need. 36 If you have money, take it—and a knapsack and a sword. Danger is imminent. 37 For the prophetic Scripture about me ‘He will be accused of being a criminal’ will now come to pass. All that was prophesied of me will be fulfilled.”
38 The disciples told him, “Lord, we already have two swords!”
“You still don’t understand,” Jesus responded.” —Luke 22:26-38
“For the word of God is alive and active. Sharper than any double-edged sword, it penetrates even to dividing soul and spirit, joints and marrow; it judges the thoughts and attitudes of the heart.”—Hebrews 4:12
In Ephesians 6 it says,
“10 Finally, be strong in the Lord and in his mighty power. 11 Put on the full armor of God, so that you can take your stand against the devil’s schemes. 12 For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the powers of this dark world and against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms. 13 Therefore put on the full armor of God, so that when the day of evil comes, you may be able to stand your ground, and after you have done everything, to stand. 14 Stand firm then, with the belt of truth buckled around your waist, with the breastplate of righteousness in place, 15 and with your feet fitted with the readiness that comes from the gospel of peace. 16 In addition to all this, take up the shield of faith, with which you can extinguish all the flaming arrows of the evil one. 17 Take the helmet of salvation and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God.“
Thank You for this reminder this morning, Lord. Teach us how to live the way You want us to live in this time. Teach us how to be watchful without fear, and how to stand in peace and in Your strength and might, and how to be armed with our “swords.”
“What, then, shall we say in response to these things? If God is for us, who can be against us?” —Romans 8:31
