Seasons of “Dormancy”

It’s so easy to eventually discount something we’ve been waiting to behold within our lives…

…to be discouraged,

to lose hope after some time passes.

Whenever that answer to prayer,

that hope,

that promise…

seems to become less and less relevant,

…less and less likely.

We wait,

and we wait…

without seeing anything unfold.

Dormancy

—It seems like just a waste of time doesn’t it?

But it’s no waste of time to God.

He does a great deal during a time of “dormancy”…

dor·man·cy

1. the state of having normal physical functions suspended or slowed down for a period of time.”the insects are able to enter prolonged states of dormancy, allowing them to resist freezing”

2. the state of being temporarily inactive or inoperative.”his prolonged dormancy ended with the publication of Collected Poems”

In a seed, a season of “dormancy”— a resting period, a time of slowing down drastically—eventually leads to a season of new growth.

Maturation.

We can trust Him just as much in seasons of “dormancy” as we can in seasons of blossoming and blooming.

As children of God, He’s always doing a work in us. 🌱🌷

"And I am certain that God, who began the good work within you, will continue his work until it is finally finished on the day when Christ Jesus returns."—Philippians 1:6 NLT

He knows what we need, and exactly when we need it in order to grow, and to thrive in this life with Him.

Did you know that it’s dangerous to a plant if it breaks its time of “dormancy” too soon?

Song of Solomon 2:10-12 ESV

10 My beloved speaks and says to me:
“Arise, my love, my beautiful one,
    and come away,
11 for behold, the winter is past;
the rain is over and gone.

12 The flowers appear on the earth,
the time of singing has come,
and the voice of the turtledove
    is heard in our land.

  1. Dear Heather, Thank you for your post on patience. I was recently told that I lack this fruit of the Spirit. I remember my gram telling me that also as a teen. I see myself differently, as a person who has endured the pain of estrangement from my two sons for decades, trusting and waiting upon the Lord. I am also a caregiver for a functionally disabled sixty year old man for thirty years now, which in man’s time, has required much patience. I am not perfect and I get frustrated when tired but I trust God has a plan for me and He says, and it is written, it will be good. Your words have helped remind me to stay focused on what God says about me, not what man says. Thank you.
